Quantum field theory and strings: a challenge for modern particle physics

Dr. Johannes Brödel – Senior Scientist at D-PHYS, ETH Zurich

While there are still numerous mathematical challenges for particle physicists when calculating scattering amplitudes for the explanation and confirmation of results measured at modern particle accelerators, the theoretical development of quantum field theory and even more string theory seems to be on hold: low-hanging fruits are taken and results tend to be mostly mathematical and ususally very involved. Even worse, most of those results fail to contribute to our structural understanding of the universe. I will take a snapshot on the state of the field, balance between pragmatism, mathematical guidance, interpretation and open questions, hereby blending in a part of the research I am involved in.
